Response to President Trump's Speech Before the Joint Session of Congress

March 2, 2017

Today, in response to President Trump's speech before the Joint Session of Congress last night, DNC Vice Chair and Assembly Member Michael Blake released the following statement:

"President Trump’s address to Congress was filled with grandiose statements of American nationalism and promises of unity, strength, and progress. However, the rhetoric of keeping our country safe, investing in American jobs, and 'draining the swamp' is hollow and falls on deaf ears for millions of Americans who would be negatively affected by his proposed policies.

If the President's policies are enacted as described, millions of people risk losing health care, our water systems will continue to see record levels of lead and other poisons, and millions of valuable members of our society would be arrested, detained and deported for simply trying to live the American Dream.

The proposed Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement Office, or 'VoICE,' is discriminatory and fuels the false narrative that immigrants are a danger to our society. Instead of wasting government resources to further divide communities, President Trump should focus his efforts on improving the lives of all Americans, including immigrants, and seeking ways to include their voices and talents in the American experience.

President Trump has built a dangerous narrative: characterizing our inner cities as wastelands rampant with violent crime conducted by black and brown people, blaming immigration for economic downturn, and suggesting Muslims are the primary source of terrorism. These dog-whistles of nationalism set up what he calls 'An environment of lawless chaos,' giving him free reign to essentially declare war on black and brown communities.

We, as the Democratic Party, will never stand for this harmful path but rather will stand by our brothers and sisters of all faiths, colors, creeds, and nationalities. We will stand with the LGBTQ community, with women, with the working class, and, we will fight for the rights of all people because that is who we are."
