Today, the Michael Blake for DNC Campaign announced that Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has endorsed Assembly Member Michael Blake in his campaign for DNC Vice Chair. President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s endorsement follows those of U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, state party leaders and elected officials from across the country.
"Michael Blake has been a fighter for the people of The Bronx in Albany, and has articulated a strong vision for the future of the Democratic Party. In these challenging times, we need voices like Michael Blake to help guide our party forward, and I am proud to endorse him for vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee," said Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx Borough President. "We've worked closely together to organize initiatives in diverse communities, especially the Latino community, to provide economic opportunity and education."
Ruben Diaz Jr. first entered public office as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1997, and is currently serving his second full term as Bronx Borough President, having been reelected in November 2013 with more than 89 percent of the vote.
As borough president, Ruben Diaz Jr. has led the implementation of a robust agenda—on economic development, housing, education, and public safety—in every corner of the borough. The Bronx has seen over $9.4 billion in new development of all kinds since Borough President Diaz took office in 2009. This includes more than 23,000 new units of housing, and thousands of new jobs.
More than 15,000 new jobs have been created in The Bronx since 2009, thanks in large part to the continued partnership between Borough President Diaz, the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation and those seeking to do business in the borough. As a result of those efforts, the unemployment rate in The Bronx has been cut nearly in half, and 100,000 more Bronx residents have jobs today than when Borough President Diaz took office seven years ago.
Assembly Member Michael Blake offered the following response to President Diaz Jr.’s endorsement.
“I am incredibly proud to have the support of President Diaz Jr. who has been a champion for many of the issues I’m passionate about like economic development, public service and civic engagement. I’ve had the privilege to work with President Diaz Jr. on important initiatives including “New Faces of Tech” an event that connected emerging tech leaders to hundreds of Bronx youth. His successful leadership as a former legislator and as an executive on a county wide level demonstrates the continual support of local elected leaders who believe in our BUILD OUR BENCH focus. Because of his leadership, we are Building A Better Bronx that serves as a template for policy and political success on the ground that epitomizes #LeadershipForTomorrow.
