THE BRONX, NEW YORK – Today, Republican U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Susan Collins released a proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act. Following that development, New York State Assembly Member and Candidate for DNC Vice Chair Michael Blake released the following statement:
“People are alive today because of the Affordable Care Act. While there are improvements that can be made to it, repealing it for political gain is not an option. The plan put forth today by US Senators Cassidy and Collins to repeal is not a viable replacement. Instead, their plan will make it harder for folks with pre-existing conditions to get coverage, will lead to higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs for patients, and will greatly reduce the total number of people with health insurance. To make matters worse, it does so while providing a massive tax cut for the rich.
As an Assembly Member representing the South Bronx, I have seen firsthand the countless lives saved by the Affordable Care Act. Although there are ways that we can improve the law to bring down costs and further expand access, this kind of plan is not the way forward. It will cause chaos and hurt hardworking Americans. Republicans need to stop playing politics with our health care and work with Democrats to find a bipartisan solution that builds on the progress we’ve made.”
