Today, on the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, New York State Assembly Member and Candidate for DNC Vice Chair Michael Blake released the following statement:
“The anniversary of Roe v. Wade is an important opportunity to recognize the remarkable progress we have made in this country to ensure the fundamental right of women to make their own private reproductive health decisions. I was encouraged yesterday as I joined millions of women and men worldwide to stand in solidarity and affirm that women's rights are human rights. Moments like these are a reminder that a woman's autonomy over her own body is not and should never be a partisan issue, but a fundamental human right.
As we honor our commitment to this basic right though, we must also re-commit ourselves to protecting it. In the 44 years since the Court’s decision, many have continued to attack efforts to provide affordable and accessible abortion services. With a new President who has vowed to appoint a Supreme Court Justice willing to roll back this decision, it is more critical now more than ever that we fight for leaders up and down the ballot who are committed to safeguarding this freedom.”
