Statement from Michael Blake regarding the Office of Congressional Ethics

January 5, 2017

The attempts made by Congressional Republicans to remove the autonomy of the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) are not only alarming but representative a more ominous pattern of corrupt behavior by GOP legislators in recent weeks. Republican members of the House, emboldened by their legislative majority, unfortunately now feel as though they can act with impunity behind closed doors.

I commend those concerned Americans who reached out to their elected officials and demanded that they immediately remove the measure from consideration. It is the direct involvement of everyday citizens in our democracy that makes the greatest different.

I am relieved that the House Republican Conference Committee has listened to the will of the People and I encourage our Members of Congress to re-focus their priorities on bettering the lives of the American people and adding transparency to the legislative process. Democratically elected officials must be held accountable to their constituents, not their own interests.
